The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ or DEBRE TABOR (ቡሄ) Celebration

On 18 August 2016 Ethiopians in London Celebrated the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ or DEBRE TABOR (ቡሄ) at the Battersea St Mary of Ethiopian Orthodox Church Garden. The Celebration was organised by St Mary of DebreTion Ethiopian OTC majority members.

The Congregation prayed for the people of Ethiopia, Britain and for Peace and stability in the rest of the world. Member of the clergy preached about the transfiguration of Jesus Christ and how Ethiopians reflect the Transfiguration by making JIRAF and by burning CHIBO in the evening. The JIRAFF (Amharic) is used to produce a terrific gunshot sound which can be heard beyond 10KM  and the burning of the CHIBO (Amharic) gives bright light as it is mentioned in the Bible. The above practices are not simply traditional in Ethiopia but they are deeply religious and linked with Christianity.

HERE IS BIBLE’S ACCOUNT:
Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother brought them up on a high mountain by themselves, and was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him . . . A bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear him!’ And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. But Jesus came and touched them and said, ‘Arise, and do not be afraid.’ And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only (Matthew 17:1-3.5-8).
